"Volunteering with Children Within Our Borders the most rewarding experiences I have ever encountered. Yes, sometimes it's hectic. Yes, things never go as planned. Yes, sometimes the children are a lot to handle. But at the end of the day, none of that matters. All that matters is the impact that we, as a collective group, are able to make on each and every child living in that hotel." -Olivia bashton, CWOB Volunteer in Orlando, FL. CBOB Invites You to #GivingTuesdayBy: Karissa Disla As the holiday season approaches, CBOB is becoming a part of the ultimate #GivingTuesday Campaign! Through this campaign, CBOB’s followers, along with their friends and family, can openly donate for this giving season. This campaign was designed specifically for supporting our local programs and providing this holiday season a toy for a child and the continuation of our educational workshops at Children Within our Borders cities in Orlando and Gainesville. Thanksgiving is a season of gratitude; a season where one can reflect on the blessings that their life is full, whether it’s something as simple as having a family. Thanksgiving evokes a sense of consciousness towards the reality of our lives and the people in them, manifesting the first thing we are willing to share for the giving season: our hearts with each other. Children Beyond Our Borders wants to share our heart with you, and we want to do it through this campaign. All donations given in through this campaign will be going directly to the toy drives and funding of the holiday events in Orlando and Gainesville, our programs focus directly on giving back to a struggling community. CBOB’s Operation Director, Tatiana Paz, was inspired by this campaign and planted seeds of inspiration amongst CBOB’s interns after stating, "We want to make it a goal to make sure that every child in our CWOB programs can receive a brand new, unopened gift for this next upcoming holiday.” So, our goal is this: to bring joy and love amid the children of struggling community. Each donation isn’t simply a new toy, it is a spirit of love of being distributed through a toy. Each donation guarantees one more new present for a child; it guarantees a child’s sense of significance in themselves. Just picture this: through your donation you will give a child their first ever unused gift, you would be giving them something that is their own! Join CBOB during this season of giving thanks and giving back by becoming a part of a campaign. Through your donation, you can ensure a smile on a child’s face because of the new treasure you will be giving them. Perhaps the most important and significant role you can play in this campaign is also the simplest: sharing the campaign and our goal to your own Facebook feed. This promotes a larger coverage, meaning more chances to impact more children. Don’t simply be a part of something, inspire others to become a part of it also. CBOB challenges you to spread love for this season. Simply go on our page, click donate and then share! Happy Thanksgiving and happy giving! Happy Birthday to US!By Lauren Visco This month we are excited to celebrate our anniversary! Thirteen years ago we started our fight against social injustice. What started with the love and passion of students from the University of Florida who wanted to give back to their homeland of Colombia, has grown and blossomed into something they could have only dreamed of. We continue to work with those in Colombia affected by the scars of the nation’s internal conflict, but through our passion have been able to expand our mission beyond Colombia. Children Beyond Our Borders has been able to extend its reach on a global scale by now serving children in Ecuador, Nicaragua and more cities in Colombia. Our expansion in Latin America inspired us to look to our communities and begin our work right here at home, serving Gainesville, Tallahassee, and Orlando. In the last three years we have gone from one program to five! What started off as Crossing Borders has now turned into Bound for Peace, our service trip program that sends volunteers to develop workshops for youth in Latin America. One program that has grown out of our need to do more has been our very successful Volunteer Internship Program (VIP). VIP is made for people from all walks of life who want to give back to the communities they are passionate about. This program has grown so much since its beginnings in 2013 with only 4 applicants to over 80 last year, and even more expected this year! Through the years we have also been able to bring our fight against social injustice to our local communities, with the implementation of our newest program, Children Within Our Borders (CWOB). CWOB has been a blessing to our community not only because of the children it serves, but the opportunities it has opened up for our chapters across the State of Florida. From a program that started with four students at UF, Children Beyond Our Borders student chapters can now be found at: University of Florida, University of Central Florida, and Florida State University. We are also so proud of the installment of our scholarship program. IAMCBOB is our scholarship program for 5 students who demonstrate a strong desire to acquire a higher education, to attend college all-expenses paid. With this scholarship program we are able to help students break the cycle of poverty. Our very first graduate of this program was Yosimar! Yosimar studied Hospitality and Tourism in Cartagena, Colombia. The benefit of this scholarship can best be described by Yosimar’s own words “I want to study at a university because it will open the door to many opportunities. Studying there will allow me to be better prepared to live in this world and face the many challenges the world brings.” Over 13 years our love and passion for bettering the lives of children everywhere continues to grow. On this celebratory month we remember and give thanks to those who started it all: Angelica Suarez, Luis Felipe Garcia, Oscar Trujillo, and Liliana Bustamante. Thank you to everyone who has been on this 13-year journey with us, we are looking forward to the many more years to come. Join CBOB as we raise money for our children locally and spread student health by Zumba-ing for 3 hours with some of the best Zumba instructors from Florida!Children Beyond Our Borders, Inc. (CBOB) is a 501 C 3 Non-Profit organization striving to fight against social injustices beyond physical and psychological borders. Its mission is to provide opportunities for children and youth affected by armed conflict and social injustice and to find peace, prosperity, and well being through education and empowerment. CBOB does this by creating awareness, providing educational tools, and establishing relationships. We are the CBOB Student Chapter at the University of Florida. We are a group of dedicated undergraduate students that fight for the awareness and hopeful termination to the ongoing issues in Colombia: poverty, lack of proper schooling, conflict and internal displacement. Zumba is a Colombian Dance Fitness Program that involves dance and aerobic elements. Zumba's choreography incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Squats and lunges are also included. It is an amazing workout done through dance moves and aerobic exercise. All levels of dancers are encouraged to participate. Our Zumbathon is an event that centers on health and body fitness through an ongoing zumba class. The event lasts an average of three hours, however, there are breaks in between and all participants are encouraged to rest at their own pace. At a Zumbathon, participants are instructed by professionals and achieve an amazing workout while dancing and interacting with others. Countless individuals would benefit from this amazing, engaging, and fun event. Students, faculty, staff, and community members could participate in the great workout, where they would have fun while staying active and raising funds. Along this would benefit the many children in Colombia that have been victims of internal displacement, violence, abuse, and more. Anyone that would like to participate in this event is welcome to come and enjoy a great time. We encourage all levels of dancers to come. Do you have an overwhelming desire to help people in a different country? Children Beyond Our Borders’ (CBOB) Bound for Peace (BFP) Volunteer Service Trips are back by popular demand! With our new mission: Bound for Peace is a service trip program that sends volunteers to develop workshops for youth in Latin America. We strive to facilitate interactive and educational workshops relevant to community needs, to strengthen social and emotional support for the kids we work with, and to provide volunteers with exposure to ideas about equity and inclusivity. Volunteers will not only be facilitating workshops for at-risk youth in these communities but they will be able to fully immerse themselves in the culture of the country where they are working. Volunteers can directly interact with citizens of the communities which will allow them to serve as positive role models and ultimately empower the children to be more than they could have ever dreamed of being. Shanquell Dixon, President of the FSU Chapter of Children Beyond Our Borders, was fortunate enough to be chosen to volunteer on one of CBOB’s past Bound for Peace Service Trips. In her own words: “During my Bound for Peace trip, I learned that communication isn’t just what you say, but how you interact with others. At many points I didn’t understand what was being said to me or how to respond well in Spanish, but showing the children attention and love was enough to get my message across. This trip allowed me to get in touch with people using my actions instead of my words. I’ll never forget how great of an experience this all was for me.” This hands-on experience gives volunteers a chance to not only better the communities where they are working, but they will be given the opportunities to better themselves as well. Volunteers will be able to visualize the hardships that these children go through in a way that they have never been exposed to before. By acknowledging the difficult lives of citizens in these impoverished areas, our volunteers will come back with first-hand knowledge that will permit them to spread awareness of these hardships and how CBOB helps these communities. The cities we will be travelling to on our several service trips are: Medellin, Colombia, Cali, Colombia, Cartagena, Colombia, and Quito, Ecuador. Trip dates and prices will be released to active members and interns at our 3rd Annual Gala. The general public will have access to this information soon after! Join us on one of our Bound for Peace trips! An incredible adventure through a fascinating city is waiting for you. Sea World Total WIne Wonder Works Orlando In a time where Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat dominate most conversations with the usual, “Did you see that?” or question of the newest trends, it’s apparent that social media is more than a mere outlet for us to write what’s on our minds in a brief 140 characters or 10 second video. As businesses begin to note the new wave of change in terms of their marketing strategies, one thing is obvious: social media presence is an important factor in whether or not a business soars in sales or is deemed as old fashioned. And so, losing the crowd they aim for the most: the millennials. No longer is being deemed an entrepreneur something exclusive and risky. In fact, millennials are known to be the generation with an “entrepreneurial spirit”. How? Through their social media presence. Social media is no longer excluded to past time, but now is used for self branding; a platform where relationships are made, networking conducted, and communities built. All of this through the simplicity of a screen. The importance of creating a strong media presence is to create relevance in the digital sphere in that a strong community of followers allows for one’s cause or vision to be deemed as relevant because it is actually acknowledged. The power of using human sentiment through a striking photoset or captivating words can do wonders in the nonprofit world. Social media outlets, such as Facebook and Instagram, can now be used to our advantage; a means by which one can directly express their vision to the masses. The use of social media as a means to gain influence over a specific target promotes easy accessibility. In other words, with the right use of hashtags and the correct manipulation of social media platforms, brands are able to promote an easy way to spread the word about their vision to a broad crowd, in both numbers and diversity. In our case, through the use of creating strong social media presence, Children Beyond Our Borders is accessible to anyone. Through the use of photographs and words, such as blog posts, we are able to create an emotional bond with our viewers. No longer are brands and companies distant; their ability to display raw emotions to their viewers on different social media outlets promotes a sense of connectivity with a brand, its vision, and its viewers. So, social media sponsors connection to not only surrounding peers, but also to potential followers around the globe. Social media draws attention to the importance of being more than a mere outlet of getting a vision across, but rather, to promote awareness among its followers; to foster an urgency to not only be united in a vision to bring about change, but, to actually be a part of that change. The importance of social media, especially in this new fast-pace culture, is something that must be acknowledged. Nonprofits can use this innovation as a platform to not only spread word about their visions, but to also create a bond with their viewers in order to generate change together. Children Beyond Our Borders creates emotional ties with its followers, and thus, an active community working toward a common goal: education in order to bring change to a child’s life, no matter their upbringing. On September 28, 2016, the Children Beyond Our Borders, Inc. (CBOB) student chapters at University of Florida, Florida State University and University of Central Florida will be participating in CBOB’s National Tabling Event. The theme of this tabling event is “Who Lifts You Up?” This National Tabling Event will serve as a new CBOB Student Chapters tradition for years to come! Students and faculty who pass by the student chapters’ tables will be able to write the name of a person who inspires them (lifts them up) on a balloon! The balloons are representations of people who spark our motivation to pursue our dreams. By writing the name of a person who lifts you up on a balloon, you’ll be thanking them for the advice and influence that they have instilled upon you. The Student Chapters will also be by raising money for chapter events, IAMCBOB Scholars and Bound For Peace service trips by hosting bake sales at their respective locations! “Who Lifts You Up?” is a brilliant way to kick off the school year and it is also a remarkable opportunity to spread the CBOB message! The CBOB Student Chapters work toward igniting student interest in the educational, social wellness, community service and youth empowerment aspects of Latin America and in our local communities. Kassandra Cabrera, Public Relations Chair for the FSU Student Chapter: “We are hoping for this event to bring the members of our FSU community together while letting them know what CBOB is all about. I think this event will generate a lot of activity because we are approaching “tabling” in a different manner that will hopefully spark the curiosity of students on our campus.” Join us for Who Lifts You Up? on Wednesday, September 28! Don’t forget to pick up tasty CBOB treats as well! UF: Plaza of the Americas from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. FSU: Landis Green from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. UCF: Student Union 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On this mission, she not only recruited amazing volunteers but she also found love. David was a Senior studying there at the time. “We met and have never stopped talking since,” Andrea said of her first encounter with David. Fast forward to October 3rd, 2015 - the night of our second annual “Passport to Peace” Gala. As the CBOB family watched, David proposed to Andrea in front of all those she holds close to her heart (see photo above).
Our organization, and this bridal shower, would not be successful without the help of our amazing supporters. Any donations would make a huge difference in the success of this event. If you are unable to donate money, please consider donating gently used dresses, shoes, hair accessories, or any other things that may be useful for their activities. Andrea is asking for donations by July 25th so she can purchase decorations, catering, and goody bags for the girls.
